What We Accept

We accept essential items that will fit in a small apartment for someone starting over. People transitioning from homelessness often have very little other than their clothes.  Although we attempt to provide them with choices of these basic items, we can only accept furniture that will fit in a small apartment and can be moved upstairs.


In order to treat our clients with dignity and respect, we cannot accept items that are stained, torn, damaged by pets, chipped or broken. We will inspect items before accepting them and reserve the right to say "No, thank you" if the item is not appropriate for our clients.


Furniture must be free of rips, tears, stains, or patches in the fabric. No pet hair or pet stains embedded in the fibers

We Accept:​

  • Mattresses, Box Springs, Bed Frames (Metal “Harvard” frames only) – twin, full or queen

  • Bureaus, Dressers

  • Sofas and Loveseats and Ottomans

  • Upholstered chairs, Recliners, and Rockers

  • Dining Table Chairs, Kitchen Counter Chairs

  • Tables - Kitchen, Dining, Coffee, End, Nightstands, TV stands

  • Bookcases and Small Cabinets

  • Small Desks and Desk chairs

We cannot accept:
  • Bunk Beds, Air Mattresses, Water Beds, Hospital Beds, Motorized or Sleep Number Beds, Loft Beds, Platform Beds, Futons, Headboards, Wooden Bed Frames, Cribs, Crib Mattresses or Bedding

  • King Mattresses and Box Springs

  • Office Furniture, File cabinets

  • Drafting Tables, Vanities

  • Sleep Sofas, and Recliner Sofas

  • Armoires and Wardrobes

  • High Chairs

  • Entertainment Centers

  • Metal/Wall Mounted Cabinets

  • China Cabinets, Hutches, or Buffets

  • Outdoor, Porch, Sunroom Furniture

  • Large Bookcase

Kitchen Items

Kitchen items should be clean and free from chips or breaks

We Accept:
  • Kitchen Dishes

  • Drinking glasses, flatware, mugs, (ideally sets of 4 or more) No logos

  • Mixing Bowls, Bakeware

  • Cooking Utensils

  • Dish towels and pot holders

  • Cutlery/Flatware

  • Kitchen Knives

  • Pots and Pans

We cannot accept:
  • Fine China

  • Stemware

  • Wine Racks

  • Mugs with logos

  • Glassware with logos

  • Beer or Wine Glasses

  • Baking or Serving Pieces that cannot go into a microwave

Linens and Towels

Linens should be clean, free of stains, rips or tears

We Accept:
  • Sheets, Blankets, Comforters – Twin, Full, Queen

  • Pillowcases, Duvets and Duvet covers

  • Bath Towels, Hand towels, and Face/Washcloths

  • Shower Curtains and New Shower Curtain Liners

We cannot accept:
  • Curtains or Curtain Rods

  • Bed Pillows

  • Shams and Dust Ruffles

  • King Comforters, Blankets or Sheets

  • Beach Towels

  • Electric Blankets

  • Mattress toppers or Mattress pads.


Appliances must be working, with all parts, and must be clean

We Accept:
  • Blenders and Food Processors

  • Coffee Makers, Keurig

  • Electric Kettles and Frypans

  • Fans

  • Irons and Ironing Boards

  • Lamps (no halogen lamps)

  • Toasters and Toaster Ovens

  • Vacuum Cleaners

  • Microwaves (countertop only)

  • Mixers with Beaters

  • Slow Cookers with Lids

  • George Foreman type grills

We cannot accept:
  • Air Conditioners or Purifiers

  • Bread Machines

  • Catering Equipment or Coffee Urns

  • Dehumidifiers or Humidifiers

  • Fondue Pots

  • Sewing Machines

  • Deep Fryers

  • Ice Cream Makers

  • Pasta Machines

  • Popcorn Poppers

  • Personal Care Appliances

  • Warming Trays

  • Built-in Appliances, Cooktops, Ovens, Stoves, Gas Dryers, Dishwashers, or Freezers

  • TVs, DVD/CD player, Speakers

  • Computers, Laptops or Printers

We cannot accept any appliance/electronic over 5 years old


Items should be free from stains and not broken

We Accept:
  • Mirrors and framed art

  • Laundry Baskets/Hampers

  • Rugs (bound, 8x10 or less)

  • Baskets

  • Plastic Storage Bins/cabinets

We cannot accept:
  • Home Décor Items or Unframed art

  • Books

  • Picture/Photo Frames, Candles or Candlesticks

  • CD/Tape Racks

  • Fireplace Tools

  • Pet Supplies

  • Automobile Equipment

  • Holiday Decorations

  • Punch bowls or Vases

  • Food, Clothing or Toys

  • Medical Equipment

  • Bicycles, Exercise or Sports


  • Musical instruments

  • Rugs larger than 8 x 10, Carpet Remnants or Rug Pads

  • Building Materials, Light & Plumbing Fixtures

  • Suitcases

  • Strollers and Car Seats.

  • Baby and children's equipment


We reserve the right to refuse any item deemed unsuitable for our clients.


There is a financial cost for New Life to dispose of items that we receive that are broken, stained, or not suitable for clients. Help us focus our financial donations to serving people transitioning out of homelessness by following our
