Meet Dan Ott
Updated: 3 hours ago
You may recognize Dan Ott as the co-leader of our Youth Leadership Program or as a longtime volunteer with the group from United Church of Christ in Medfield (UCC Medfield). After retiring from a 31-year career in manufacturing at Web Industries a little over a year ago, the resident of Medfield sought out new opportunities to make a difference at New Life. No stranger to leading and mentoring youth, Dan volunteered to co-lead our Youth Leadership Program formed last fall. Drawing from his experience with youth ministries in college, his involvement with mission trips and UCC Medfield’s high school group, and his many coaching positions for his daughters’ sports teams over the years, Dan believes faith is about finding passion. “There’s a lot of ways to do good,” Dan says, and one of his ways is by helping kids find their own passion.
Of course, Dan has a few passions of his own – all of which center around being active. Mountain biking, cycling, and cross country skiing are just a few activities you can find him doing in his free time. He has also coached many sports, including lacrosse, soccer, and short track speed skating. Dan clearly passed his love of sports onto his two daughters, whom both were college athletes. His oldest daughter was the captain of the lacrosse team at UMass Amherst and now lives nearby working for TechTarget. Dan’s family has grown, as his oldest daughter has since married and is caring for foster children. His youngest daughter played for Hobart and William Smith Colleges and now lives in CT working for Unilever.
So why does Dan love volunteering at New Life? “The mission is remarkably tangible,” he said fondly before elaborating that it’s amazing to see the smiles on clients’ faces as they shop and the excitement when a child is told, “Yeah, you can have that” when they see something they like.
