Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy Mills

Updated: Aug 27, 2019

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I live in Medfield, MA with my husband Barry (also a New Life volunteer). We have three beautiful children - Eric 26, Abby 24, Ginny 16 and two crazy dogs. When we are not in Mass, we love spending time in South Carolina.

Since my teens, I have volunteered in so many great organizations and churches. My parents - 84 years young - are a supreme example of volunteerism. I have tried to model their commitment since I was a child.

How were you introduced to New Life?

Barbara Yates heard me speak about the childcare volunteering I was doing in 2013 at a SMOC family homeless rehab shelter in Framingham. Barbara approached me about getting involved at New Life.

Our church, UCC Medfield, stands behind New Life and that has created a meaningful connection for us as a family.

Why New Life?

I feel that New Life honestly does every level of service with intentionality, integrity, and dignity. I feel respected as a volunteer and strive to show the same level of respect and dignity to our clients. I have been with New Life for almost six years, from the beginning.

An interesting new life story?

My all-time favorite story is about a 5-year-old boy. He came with his mom and as I was helping him pick out fun sheets. He said, “But Miss Kathy, why do I need sheets and a blanket? I don’t have a bed. I sleep on the floor.” I reassured him that he was going home that day with his very own bed, sheets, and a blanket! (and so much more for his home).

An elderly woman was with me and chose a dish set that had a matching teapot. She asked, “ I can really have that teapot?” I reassured her, “Yes! That teapot and dishes have been waiting for you”. She got tears in her eyes and gave me a hug.

So many of our clients arrive feeling scattered and overwhelmed, not being able to make eye contact. So many leave us, verbally thankful, giving a hug!

A big thank you to Kathy and our community of volunteers. Without you we couldn't reach so many people in need.
